Painted copper over an iron skeleton by Gustave Eiffel, Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift from France to the United States, dedicated in New York Harbor on 28 October 1886. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s figure stands 46 metres from heel to torch; the skin is hammered copper only 2.4 mm thick, which is why the statue could be shipped in crates and still flex in harbour wind. It remains one of the most visited monuments in the world, and one of the few 19th-century sculptures whose engineering is as famous as its face. Source ↗
