Tesla unveiled the Model S in 2012 as a luxury electric sedan meant to prove EVs could outrun gasoline cars rather than replace golf carts. It was the company’s first mass-market vehicle, the one that put a battery pack under the floor and a touchscreen where the dashboard used to be.
