Rolex launched the Submariner in 1953 as a tool watch for divers: luminescent markers, a rotatable timing bezel, and a case rated (then) to 100 metres, later 300. The blue-bezel steel version became the default picture of a luxury sports watch, worn as much on land as underwater. A new Submariner is allocated, not discounted; vintage references routinely trade above list, which is why a steel diver is treated like a small gold bar with a movement inside. Source ↗
